Blue Rata scenic reserve is located on the Hangatahua (Stony) River. Here you will find beautiful clear swimming holes that are full of rainbow and brown trout, and a great place for a picnic.

The Hangatahua River is a well kept secret in Taranaki, it is similiar to the world famous Tongariro River in Taupo with perfectly clear waters that are a joy to swim in or fish.

Starting from Old South Road in Okato this scenic walkway meanders along the Kahihi stream and the Stony (Hangatahua) River, through native bush and farmland.

The walk way is only 4km in length and is great for kids, so pack a picnic, swimming togs, and a fishing rod and enjoy a real piece of Taranaki.
