Oakura Beach

One of the gems of Taranaki, this beach has it all from great surf to suit all levels, good fishing, seafood, and warm sand pools for kids.

One of the nicest beach walks is to start from Oakura Beach and walk south down to Ahu Ahu Beach then across to Weld Road. You get to see some beautiful beach scenery and surf breaks.

Corbett Park   Located on the northern side of the Oakura Bridge/River this is a great spot for picnics, beach walks, BBQ's, safe swimming for the kids, rugby field, and toilet facilities. In the whitebaiting season it is a great spot to take kids so they can have a go at catching the slippery fishes.
Lucy's Gully A few minutes south of Oakura is an area of beautiful Californian redwoods, set in native bush. Great for walks and picnics.
Oakura River A great and safe river for kids to swim in and kayak.
Koru Pa A stronghold of Nga Mahanga, now covered in native bush, with a track leading down to the river to swimming holes for the kids.
Ahu Ahu Beach/Reserve

You will find this hidden beauty about two minutes drive south of Oakura on the Surf Highway 45.

This is beautiful seaside reserve that offers surfing, fishing, and a small stream for the kids to play. It also has toilets facilities and picnic areas.

Not to mention a great left hand break that is a blessing for beginners.

It is so beautiful here that some locals have been married at this reserve.

You can walk from Oakura Beach to Ahu Ahu Beach in about 15 minutes.

Weld Road Beach Reserve

A 5 minutes further south from Oakura you will find Weld Road Beach Reserve, here you will find toilets, a great little river the kids will love to swim in, surfcasting, and surf breaks.

The surf break is a right hander and it is also great for beginners

Wreck of the Gairloch You will find this at low tide on the southern side of Weld Road

Authors Personal Comments - life in Taranaki.

Having lived in Oakura I think it is one of the most amazing places to raise a family, it has so many things for kids to do. No matter what the weather I would always see the neighbourhood kids out enjoying themselves, to them the outdoors was like breathing.

The heart of Oakura is the families that live there, there is such a neat feel about the township and an exceptionally high level of community involvement.

I have many fond memories of coming home from work getting the family together and heading down to the beach or river. At the beach we would surf, swim or put a longline out, in summer fresh fish on the BBQ or smoked with wine was just pure living.
