FOSSIL CANYON -

This is going to be a Taranaki Classic as well!

Starting with a spectacular waterfall abseil, and then a enchanted walk down the river with swimming pools and waterslides, then exploring a scenic tributary back to the start.

Here's how we discovered this amazing trip.

NEW Fossil Canyon Adventure – while researching a mountain biking / Quad bike adventure, I meet a farmer who had these numerous strange mud balls on his veranda, in which he said oh yeah all the locals around here have them, they are fossilized crabs that millions of years old, yeah right I said! As you would.

I thought he was having me on until he broke one in half and there inside was a perfectly preserved mud reddish crab!! Hey that’s pretty cool I said! As you would…

This lead to me asking where, how, and why, etc… As you would…

Then he introduced me to his neighbour Brian (who I had meet years ago and runs Okau Horse Treks, a real character, big mane of white hair, but that’s another story!) and I said where can I see some of these fossils? He sort of um and arhed as they all do… Then said why don’t I have a look at an area he was grazing some of his horses, there’s a nice river down there and some of these fossils have been picked up down there by the locals.

WOW this happens to be the most amazing piece of river I have seen in Taranaki, with beautiful waterfalls, gorges, swimming holes, limestone water slides, and had potential to be developed into another TOA adventure!!

The instructors were raving about it as we finished the research trips and said I needed to develop this as TOA’s next adventure!!

The top section is a real masterpiece of nature and certainly a wow wow wow piece for Taranaki that is very undiscovered…you are going to have to come and see for your self.

As to the fossils,,,,, if we have found many on all our trips but the mud crabs still have eluded us…until next time…you could be the lucky adventurer!!
